Wow this book was an utter piece of crap. What an amazing missed opportunity. All they did was turn the airport scene from Civil War into a two part comic, and then added some Stan Lee/Steve Ditco single issue comics where Spidey faces the Vulture. No backgound into the cinematic universe character, no new storyline or buildout, nothing but the rehash of Civil War. Boo Marvel! LAME!

I really miss when Marvel did real movie adaptions, the CA:CW adaption here is sub-par. It REALLY should have been done better. It's sad that the adaptions have been getting worse and worse lately.

I don't often give 5 stars - Name is misleading

First of all, I rarely see a book to which I'd give five stars, but this certainly deserves them! Besides that, the greatest praise I can give to a book it to make it as stained and tattered as my copy is! This means I've carried it with me everywhere so I would have it to read every spare second I had.
I think the name of the book is misleading. Had I known what this book was really about, I would have gotten it a long time ago. The Zone System (the seminal reference is probably THE NEGATIVE by Ansel Adams) is fairly straightforward, and some authors hash is to death and try to make it more complicated than it is. I thought this book was another "make something simple more complicated" books like that, but it's not. It might better be called "Sensitometry for Photographers."
It is a technical book on sensitometry - characterizing how photographic film and paper respond to exposure and development - and how to use that information to your benefit. It answers questions I've been asking for a long time, such as, "How is the ISO speed determined for film," and, "Why do B&W photographers rate their film at a speed lower than ISO?"
The book eventually does describe the Zone System and explains technically what it is doing, but doesn't try to complicate the system. The book discusses how the light meter determines exposure, and how to make a densitometer from a spot meter. It also introduces a simple and handy "incident zone system" using an incident meter that provides good exposure without a well-developed sense of visualization on the part of the photographer.
Be warned: This book IS technical in nature and involves a lot of graphs. Even though the author attempts to allay your math fears, reviews math principles and even goes in gross detail on technical drawing and graphing techniques, if reconciling your checkbook sends shivers down your spine, you're probably not going to make it very far through this book. (However, it's a joy to engineer-photographers such as myself tired of physical principles being oversimplified in other sources.)
Although the book is directed mainly toward large-format sheet-film photographers who can develop individual exposures independently, I think that any serious amateur or professional photographer would benefit from reading this book to understand the interaction of light, film and paper, and how to get the best from your materials. Many of the principles and procedures can be applied, at least in part, to roll films to ensure good exposure.

I wish I'd read this years ago!

Phil Davis has written a truly educational book that all photographers should read. Not only does he cover the zone system, which most of us have been exposed to, but he tackles the more difficult subject of sensitometery in an understandable way. Having read this book, I absolutely understand the results of my photographic efforts far better and am learing to apply the knowledge in advance to ensure better results.
If you're a casual picture taker this book will be too much for you, but if you are serious about taking full advantage of your equipment to create the best possible work you'll find reading this book to be time well spent.

A must-read for advanced photographers

This is a book all master photographers who shoot and print their own work should understand and use. It is a definitive work on the science and engineering of photo sensitive emulsions that applies not only to standard silver-halide photography but alternative methods as well like Platinum/Palladium, gum bichromate, cyanotypes, etc. although the other methods are not directly covered by the text.
This book was written for the "left brain" with all its formulas, methods and explanations. But, it is detailed enough that the brain does not have to fill in the blanks of information not included as is the case with many such books. There is a section that addresses a method of exposure form a more "right brain" view and draws on the experience of using a light meter for photographers who are at that level.
I do not believe how well written this book is compared to others dealing with the same subject. I wish I had found this book years ago.

paper back version now available

This is Stoskopf of Stoskopf's Fish Medicine. Because the book remains useful and is hard to obtain, I have arranged for it to be available in paper back as print on demand. It is in two volumes because of the limits of the printing process. It can be obtained by going to LULU.com and searching of fish medicine. An updated edition is in the works, but will be several volumes and several years in process. In the mean time, the original book is easier to obtain.

Very thorough and comprehensive reference

This book is a very thorough review of the diseases affecting fish. Unlike other texts, this book covers medicine from a taxonomic perspective, grouping diseases by the major taxonomic groups that they affect. One can look up differentials for skin diseases in a certain species without running down the entire list of bacterial, viral, etc. The only disadvantage that I found in this book is that it is not the most current book, and some of the info needs to be updated or more things added.

This well illustrated (black & white) text is the most complete single volume reference on the subject of fish medicine and diseases. It is comprehensive, contains numerous unique and valuable tables, and is a must-have book for veterinarians, aquarists, biologists, and others working with diseaes and management of ornamental, game, and food fish species.

When he reminds her how much she liked her other school and asks her to think of all the new friends she'll meet, she imagines a classroom where a paper airplane is flying, a boy is pulling his neighbor's pigtail, and another is blowing a gigantic bubble. Mr. Hartwell finally gets Sarah to stumble out of bed, eat a bit of toast, and get into the car where she slumps down into her seat. At school, the principal cheerfully welcomes her and takes her to the classroom where she is introduced as "Mrs. Sarah Jane Hartwell," the new teacher. There is a bit of foreshadowing that Sarah is an adult, but as she is always partially hidden, the ending will come as a surprise to most readers. The ink-and-watercolor illustrations are full of action and maintain the lighthearted tone. A little subplot in the paintings shows the family cat and dog having their own contest of wills while their owner is trying to get his wife up and out. The joke provides a good laugh and children may find it reassuring that they are not alone in their anxieties about new situations.

Don't delay in ordering this book.

This is a cute story to read for the First Day of School. You can find lots of activities to do with it and it sets a great tone for the first day of school-- everyone gets nervous, your teacher is human, confront your fears. A couple of warnings:
*Don't order this too close to the first day of school. I put it off and it literally came the day before school. I was very stressed as I planned for it to take up a lot of the first day. I thought I would have to redo my plans and recycle my precious copies. It worked out but I would encourage you to order in advance.
*Order a copy for each one of your teammates. When your grade level teammates hear and see this story and the cute activities you are going to do with your class, they will want to do the same. This will mean that you have to pass this to a different teacher at each of your breaks and you won't get it back until Thanksgiving. Better for them to have their own book.
*Don't share with the grade below you. You don't want them to start reading this book to their kids because they will know it when they get to you. Not to include spoilers-- but it's most fun if you haven't read it before.

Perfect to Start the School Year With!

I really like this book and read it every year on the first day of school to my second grade classes! It's a great way to start a class discussion and make the kids feel comfortable and that it's normal to be nervous on the first day. We share how each of us felt that first day and things we were nervous about like not knowing anyone. The story is about Sarah Jane Hartwell who starts the book in bed with the pillow over her head telling who we think is her father that she doesn't want to go and start over and that she's worried no one will like her. She finally gets out of bed and dressed and tries to hide in the car slouched down when the principal comes over and says they were wondering where she was and that she'd walk her to class since she's new. The book has a surprise ending when we find out that Sarah is the TEACHER and nervous about starting at a new school with a new class.

I bought this in my first year of teaching and it summed up how I was feeling and of course as most teachers are, I get nervous on the first day even though I've been teaching for years. The kids in class always love knowing that even teachers get nervous about the new school year and students - it makes teachers seem more human and relateable to the kids, which I really like.

I'm giving this 4 stars because the illustrations are HIDEOUS. The colors are fine and so are the background details, but the illustrations make the people's faces look distorted, exaggerated, and frightening. I also didn't like that the teacher says she'll "hate" her new school several times - I don't think that's the best choice of words so I replace that word when I read it aloud each year.

Overall, this is a great book to start the school year with!

Good book for nervous kids about to start school!

My 5 year old son is super shy and very hesitant around new people and in new situations. Since he will be going to kindergarten in a few months, I want to do everything I can to help him be prepared for meeting new people and learning new routines.

This book has been great for him. Not only does it help him work his way through his worries about starting school, it has some smaller words that he can sound out and help read. This alone has been great for his self confidence.
