If you're fascinated by words and their origins but are not inclined toward the pedantic, then the Morrises contribution to word lore is definitely for you. Their light touch is evidenced in their entry for the word "billion," for which they note, "In America and France, a BILLION is a thousand million. In Great Britain and Germany, it is a million million. Moral: If you want to be a billionaire, stay right here in America."
That's not to say that they are not, in the main, authoritative. They certainly appear to be. I didn't come across a single entry that looked specious. And to their great credit, when the history of a word or phrase is disputed, they are quick to point out that fact. I'm sure their conversational approach to etymology won't be for everyone--certainly not for the more scholarly inclined (well, not as a PRIMARY source, I guess, but even the most professorial of word mavens should appreciate the conversational, easily digested style in which the Morrises dispense sound--or perhaps I should say "lexical"--information).
