IFSTA, nuff said.

Anything by IFSTA has that same flair (or lack thereof). It has a lot of information, much of it good, much of it mind numbingly boring. But if you are like me, you have to read it, study it and take a test on it. If you are just interested in building construction and want to learn about it to become a better fire officer, there are better resouces out there. This book has information, you will learn, but it is painful.

This book is a must read for anyone in the fire service. Yes some construction methods will not apply to your area, but it will give you a better idea of why construction methods are different in your area.

an expansion improves this manual greatly

The 3rd edition of Building Construction has been expanded to about double the previous edition and has been arranged differently to reach beyond the 5 building classifications used by the fire service and beyond focusing on building components such as doors and windows. The images offered as examples are a great improvement over the previous edition and focus on unique features of each building classification and the challenges that each pose to the fire service. Finally, this is not an engineering textbook, and should not be seen as such. It is a text that focuses on how buildings and their components act and react when exposed to fire. This is the most critical aspect of building construction for the fire service and IFSTA has provided another excellent, updated edition.
