The brutal murders caught national attention in the media, but the killing spree didn’t stop there. Three more innocent people would lose their lives at the hands of Daniels and West in the coming week. Scott Fields tirelessly researched the killings, the capture and trial of Daniels and even interviewed a surviving member of the Niebel family to weave this tragic story into a must-read novel bringing the reader back to those dark days in the summer of 1948. What led to these brutal killings, and why was the Niebel family singled-out to be savagely murdered? Mansfield Killings.

Story is great but there are quite a few editorial errors. It is for the most part a true story. I had to reread some sentences a few times because of misplaced quotation marks in the middle or ends of a sentence that clearly was not something someone said. The writer also used Johnnie and Johnny interchangeably. I thought at first there were 2 Johnnie (or Johnny) characters. I liked the book a lot and read it in 2 sittings, 4 stars only because of the errors in it.

Worth reading

I've read several news articles from the time of the event, and I was curious to see what the author would do with his account. Fields is no John Updike, and the book could use some careful copy-editing, but Scott Fields works hard to give a fair telling to this fascinating and disturbing story and to get into the minds of both victims and perpetrators. The story itself--a true one, unfortunately--has always reminded me of the events depicted in "In Cold Blood."
