Elder Thaddeus of Vitovnica was one of the most renowned spiritual guides of Serbia in the twentieth century. As a novice he lived in obedience to Elder Ambrose of Miljkovo Monastery, a disciple of the Optina Elders. From him Fr. Thaddeus learned the Prayer of the Heart and the selfless love that came to characterize his whole ministry to the suffering Serbian people.
Born in 1914, Elder Thaddeus lived through all the suffering endured by Serbia in the twentieth century. Over the course of two World Wars, during the Communist takeover, and through the nato bombings of 1999, he co-suffered with his people. He taught, counseled, and prayed for all who came to him in pain and sorrow. His words of love and hope provided spiritual balm for people from all classes of society.
In 2002 Elder Thaddeus reposed, leaving behind a large collection of his teachings, preserved by his faithful spiritual children. His life, teachings, and spiritual conversations are here presented for the first time in English.

Best book I have read in many years

This is a must read for Christians as they struggle to make sense of a crazy and fallen world. The Elder is so real and human yet it is clear he bears the Grace of God. This is not simply a book telling you how great of a Saint the elder is. Rather, it is a look into how through frailty and struggle we can see God's mercy and compassion on his people. Further, this is a practical guide for readers to help grapple with their inner life. You will not go wrong by reading Our Thoughts Determine our Lives.

Elder Thaddeus of Serbia was born two months premature, and as a child suffered many physical ailments. He describes himself as one totally different to all the other children his age. He considered himself, even from his youngest years as not belonging to this world, and this was indeed his calling - to draw people away from this world that is dying and to the world that is eternal - that is the kingdom of heaven. As one who suffered from depression, nervousness and anxiety, it was the Elder's wish to completely withdraw from the world and dedicate his life in seclusion to the Lord. However, this was not the Lord's wish, and for this reason after much labour, sacrifice and suffering on the part of the Elder thousands of the faithful began to flock to him in search of spiritual advice and healing...
As the title suggests, the book centres around Elder Thaddeus' teachings in relation to our thoughts and how whenever we think negatively, this negativity is transferred to our neighbour. He teaches that negative thoughts are not our own, but rather demonic and encourages prayer (particularly the Jesus prayer), as a means of expelling such thoughts. Elder Thaddeus cites numerous examples of how life changing and salvific this prayer is, and how people have miraculously changed for the better through the Prayer of the Heart.
The book also focuses on family life, repentance, spiritual struggle, inner peace, on the Holy Mother of God, on the Orthodox faith and other issues of importance to the Christian.
This is an excellently written book. The Elder's teachings are a great treasure for all Christians struggling and suffering in this world. Priceless pearls of wisdom indeed. Highly recommended reading.

A field manual for spiritual warfare

Here is a book filled with many timeless pearls of wisdom that one can spend many hours silently contemplating. It is easily the best book I have read concerning the spiritual struggles we all must face in a fallen world. It is written in such a fashion that one could pick it up at any point and start reading; and still take from it many life lessons. Though it is essentially a compilation of teachings from an Orthodox monk; both Orthodox and non-Orthodox alike should gain much in the way of spiritual insight.
