About the Author
Adirondack Author Paul Laskey has been a long time member of the Adirondack Mountain Club. He has spent many years hiking the Adirondack Mountains and traveled throughout many parts the United States hiking and seeking adventure. After joining the Hadley Mountain Fire Tower Committee many years ago he developed a keen interest in Fire Towers and their History. For the past several years he has been doing talks and slide shows on this subject. In 1999 he decided to write a book on all the towers that remained standing in New York State. He states, There were several tower books out at that time, and interest in the subject was growing. No book was published on all the states towers, so I felt the timing was right and there was a market for that book. I was correct, response has been fantastic, it's selling better than I thought possible.

Find your love of New York's high places with this book ...

Why chase fire towers? Think why they're there. The best way to set up fire observation towers would be to make them gloriously high, with a grand view - better yet if they're somehow accessible from civilization down below. That's what we get with the towers and their mountain hosts described in Paul Laskey's "Survivors That Still Stand Guard." There's the history and the lore, and the fascination with a peculiar kind of structure erected far away from any road. Too bad the guys hauling up all that the steel, snapping together these erector-set steel towers way up on New York's out-of-the-way faraway mountain tops, didn't figure they'd be soon be rendered obsolete by planes years later. Ah! -- but they're a great excuse for a little exercise, to find that perfect charming picnic spot with a beautiful view, helped along by a high silvery metal tower ... and maybe to reminisce a little about the stories of New York's mountains as they were long ago. Get this book -- catch fire tower fever -- get out and climb those mountains!
