About the Author
Jennice Vilhauer, PhD, is the director of the Adult Outpatient Psychotherapy Program and an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science in the School of Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. The developer of Future Directed Therapy, she has over twelve years of experience training psychologists and psychiatrists in cognitive therapy and helping clients create better futures.

Think Forward to Thrive: Future Directed Therapy

The lesson seems so obvious, and I thought I was thinking forward when making decisions every day. It turns out, however, I was just fooling myself. I could appreciate this book for that sudden insight, alone. I realized, however, that I was making decisions based upon past experiences and anticipating similar results. I was not, as author Jennice Vilhauer, PhD. recommends, creating my future by intercepting my old, negative thoughts and inserting new expectations.
Vilhauer Leaves no chance for a reader to misinterpret what she is saying, or holes in her story that leaves a reader wondering. She covers the topic thoroughly and completely. At the end of each chapter she gives us worksheets and practice assignments. I enjoy this. They are a break from reading, instill what I have just read in my mind, and encourage me to practice what I've just read. The author tells stories of some with whom she has worked and the outcome of her patients experiences using forward thinking.
For instance in chapter 9, "Visualizing Your Future," there is an explanation of the power of visualization, and how to put this concept to use. From there Vilhauer discusses, "Future Projections," and "The Brain is a Problem-Solving Machine." She gives an example, then goes more deeply into "Visualization," then "Picture and Describe," an exercise, then "Emotional Intensity," "Exposure," and "Creating Simulations of the Future."
The chapter continues by Vilhauer stating the steps for "Outcome Simulations," and "Process Simulations." Following that are "Practice Assignments," and "Tips for Thriving." Each and every chapter is as complete as chapter nine.
I feel this book does as it promises on the front cover: "How to use the Mind's Power of Anticipation to Transcend Your Past and Transform Your Life." I'm definitely going to be studying it carefully.

Excellent

I've struggled with mild to moderate depression for much of my life. I've read many self help books about how to overcome feelings of anxiety and how to "win" the battle against my depression. Those books are fine, but they did not really have an impact on me. Think Forward to Thrive did. The worksheets in this book were incredibly helpful. After reading this book, I realized reading alone will not help me create the life I want for myself. However, reading and learning through the worksheets and exercises in this book did help me map out some very important life goals. Not only that, but it helped me formulate my own plan on how to get there. That is the major difference between this book and others I have read. This book's focus is on the reader, and how to make that particular person see how changing his or her thought process can help achieve future goals. This book helped me realize that stressful situations will always happen, but I can train my brain to react to them differently, and improve my overall happiness. A fantastic read.

Something New and Helpful

I was pleasantly surprised to come across this innovative guide! This is not just the same old regurgitated version of CBT that seems to be prevalent in so many books today. This book actually has new material and ideas which I haven’t seen before. I found them to be enlightening and helpful. There are some common themes with other cognitive therapies, such as learning to be aware of your thoughts, and a chapter on mindfulness. This book breaks new ground with cutting-edge information on how our thoughts create new future experiences, and I found this material to be very insightful. Dr. Vilhauer brings singular clarity to the concept of anticipation, illuminating how our past thinking can limit the choices we make going forward. I am a therapist, and believe that this book will benefit me both professionally and personally. After reading this book, I was able to recognize a few significant areas of change for myself. I plan to recommend Think Forward to Thrive to my clients as well!
